2021.09.25 05:02 pawn-shop-blues What are some good local TV shows/books?

Realised I've never really watched any local shows and I'm trying to expand my horizons since I'm finding it increasingly difficult to relate to Western media. Are there any TV shows (preferably in English) that give an accurate depiction of Singaporean life?

2021.09.25 05:02 ikindalikekitkat Public sector vs private sector career opportunities

Hi everyone, I’m wondering if anyone can advise me on whether I should continue working in public sector or move back to private sector.
I work in HR and has been working in this organization for 6 months now. The pay is really good given I only have 2 years of experience (I make $70k). I love my colleagues and I enjoy having a great pension (HOOPP), but the work environment is draining me. I work with very incompetent and complacent managers who make my job really difficult. I also miss the perks that I had in my old position in the private sector (unlimited time off, full benefits without cost to me, more work flexibility, etc.).
I’m currently in the final process of getting an offer from a private sector company with a compensation package of base + commission. They are flexible with the base salary but I did disclose to them that I am not moving for anything below what I’m currently earning.
Now I’m second guessing myself because I’ve seen people on this sub mention the value of a nice pension like HOOPP. So I’m wondering, what $ value would an offer need to be for a transition to make sense?
Any insight will be helpful! Thank you!

2021.09.25 05:02 latteisnotcoffee Any method to get gaming VPN's working under Linux?

I'm in China and cannot connect to most international game servers without one of these so-called gaming VPN's. I can use my regular VPN but it doesn't deal with games so well (it's playable, barely)
Without VPN it's a crapshoot on whether it'll connect at all and if it does it's almost unplayable. This is due to the Chinese great firewall inspecting traffic and slowing my connection down but not consistently so it's lost packets and variable ping all the time.
So under Windows I use Leigod or UU... but all of these only support Windows/Mac and will not work under WINE.

2021.09.25 05:02 thefoolandtherhubarb [30] ole goth-nerd-banjo diagram

Hey, all y'all!
Looking for short-term conversation or long-term friends. I'm an art history major (and nerd) with an ever-rotating index of passions. Femme and also Q. Coming out of two cancelled long-term friendships and looking to branch out.
Likes: Trees, Medieval-anything, mythology, 80ies pop and post-punk, metal/industrial music, the idea of playing an RPG video game, fantasy things, goth things, baking, sarcasm, and the Idea of DND.
Dislikes: Bigots, homophobia, the plastic tab for opening containers of hummus, anti-vaxxers, and not stirring the liquid back into the yogurt. Also, people who litter.
Fighting words: Stanley Kubrick's films are Okay and there is a multitude of directors that have addressed the same genres in superior ways.

2021.09.25 05:02 brightblade13 I hate how unfun this game ended up being (Spoilers)

Two caveats:

  1. This is a little bit of a qq rant. I get it, probably no one cares.
  2. I'm still going to play this game a few times over the years, because, let's face it, if you like CRPGs, options are limited, and this is still probably a 3/5 overall, so I admit this is a distillation of all my negative opinions rather than a balanced review.
Those things aside, I think I've played enough to say that I'm deeply disappointed in having joined the Kickstarter and preordered the game. There's so much to love about this game (shout out, Regill and Ember), and the game really does continue Kingmaker's impressive legacy of keeping the spirit of Baldur's Gate alive all these years later. The voice acting, the graphics, the overall story...they're all so wonderful!
Despite that, I'm actually having a really hard time *enjoying* the game. A couple of big reasons:
  1. There are just some obviously bad design choices here, namely the half-baked crusader mode and everything about the map UI, which gets exacerbated x1000 once you arrive in the abyss after the Midnight Fane. I could have lived with a suboptimal map that constantly changes perspective for much of the game, but getting to that particular city, especially at what should be a dramatic and enjoyable close to a long chapter, suddenly turns into a monstrous "Q" and "R" slog trying to navigate the place. I'll also add here the oft-mentioned "Miss Fest" that the game turned out to be. If you're the ultimate power gamer, sure, you might be having a blast with your tricked out, 10 class minmax build. But even throwing the game on Story difficulty for those of us without the time or interest in playing Mathfinder means spending 10 minutes buffing before every fight just to avoid watching the never-ending stream of "Miss" captions float above most enemy heads. But I could overlook all that, because, hey, these games are hard to balance and get right, and at least the Crusade management system is better than the *awful* time-gated Kingdom management system we had before...
  2. Unfortunately, the story just doesn't help, and I am beginning to realize more and more that this game is just a grimdark parody of what parents in the 1980s thought DnD was. Look, I'm not a prude. I knew going in that this was a game about demons invading earth and fighting them back. But how many graphic scenes of torture, rape, murder, and cannibalism do we need? We get it! Demons are bad! Evil, even! But do we really need constant explicit descriptions of yet another Succubus, or another reminder that demons eat people?
At the end of the day, Owlcat appears to have made what critics of Pathfinder often criticize it unfairly for being: an over-indulgent RPG system for people who like theorycrafting more than playing, and think that over-the-top violence and graphic content makes a storyline "mature."
Some of this is fixable. I can pick up mods to streamline the Crusade system, I can spend some more time on forums building my characters to avoid the miss fest. Eventually I'll get past the naseau-inducing map display.
But I can't fix the writing that trades depth for shock value, or the content bloat that kills what should be exciting crescendos at natural points in the story telling for an unnecessary 10-15 hours of gameplay that feels tacked on just to get reviewers to rave about how much there is to do.
Like I said, I'll play it through to the end, and I get that others are really enjoying it. I'm just disappointed, and sad that I'm not looking forward to future games in this series like I was after Kingmaker.
